When we think about performance storage in the consumer space, most of us skip quickly to the enthusiast-grade SSDs, and for most usage scenarios, that makes sense. But there are cases when even the fastest SSDs don't provide enough throughput - enter RAM disks. Storage devices built around volatile RAM have been in use for some time, but with RAM getting both faster and less expensive, there's an increasingly viable case to be made for using RAM as a semi-permanent storage solution. In this case, we take a look at Patriot Memory's Viper XTreme Division 4 RAM as used in a RAM disk scenario.

Not long ago, OverclockersClub looked at both Patriot's offerings in the Sandforce 2281 equipped market, the Patriot Wildfire 120GB and Patriot Pyro 120GB. The Wildfire used Toshiba Toggle mode NAND, while the Pyro used 25nm MLC NAND flash as the type of memory. The performance targets for both drives were obvious, with the Pyro falling slightly lower in the spectrum than the Wildfire in both pricing and performance. While the max reads and writes are similar, the real world performance between the two drives was evident in the testing. The Pyro SE or  Special Edition  fills the performance gap between the two drives. Read/Write speeds come in at 550MB/s/520MB/s respectively, with 85,000 IOPs 4k aligned random writes. which seems to be pretty much the standard for a SF-2281 based drive.

Patriot came to the table with the mindset to make a fast drive, and price it  aggressively,  priced near the cheapest 60GB SATA III drives, and the other models priced similarly. It certainly brings a lot of speed to the table at a price point that, last year, would have bought you half the drive the 60GB Pyro is, a value drive that has the consumer winning in the SSD market, and driving competitors to follow suit. The Pyro makes a very strong case in its performance/price ratio and sets to best the Vertex 3 that has done its best to keep the bar high, but the price-to-performance ratio of the Pyro series may be difficult to beat. This aggressive pricing strategy and the Pyro's fast Sandforce 2281 chip set it up to make a splash!â??

Patriot's performance claims are spot on. In ATTO we saw 552MB/s read and 517MB/s write. This is spot on with what we've seen from other drives using this same controller / flash combination. ... With an MSRP of just over 200 USD, the Patriot Pyro should soon be below the 200 Dollar price point at Newegg in no time at all. Patriot is known for aggressive pricing and that 200 Dollar point has a stigma about it in the same bang for the buck group of buyers as the Pyro is targeting.

At that price, the 120GB Patriot Pyro comes in at approximately $1.87 per gigabyte, which put it on par with Corsairâ??s Force Series 3 drive and makes it one of the more competitively priced SandForce SF-2200 based drives out there. Looking back at its performance and knowing that the drive is backed by a 3 year warranty, we canâ??t help but recommend the Patriot Pyro. If youâ??re looking for a fast, relatively affordable solid state drive the Patriot Pyro should be on your short list of considerations.

Performance users have different demands than enthusiasts, hence the name Performance Class. An enthusiast desires the best at any cost and will go out of their way to obtain it. A performance user is more frugal and their decision is based on price performance. Being price performance conscious, they are aware of what may be the benefits and disadvantages of their purchase. The Patriot Pyro 120GB SATA III SF-2281 SSD was designed with that in mind. A SandForce SF-2281 Controller, 550/515 MB/s read/write, multiple technologies to ensure reliability which rivals the enthusiast class with affordability.â??

As for the Pyro 120GB Async SATA 3 SSD, congratulations to Patriot for having the foresight to push the Pyro through production as it will prove to be a wise move indeed. The Patriot Pyro has the advantages of being one of the first to offer a low 60GB solution containing the SandForce SF-2281 SATA 3 processor and we guarantee that Patriot will remain very competitive as the companies history has shown. This all adds up to the Wildfire boasting best in-class performance, not to mention making it the fastest SSD we have tested.

Patriot has come to market with a drive that delivers excellent performance characteristics with its combination of Sandforce 2281 controller and 32nm MLC NAND in place of the 25nm delivered on the other 22XX-controlled comparison drives. In much of the testing, the lower-capacity Wildfire delivered performance on par with the 240GB Vertex 3 from OCZ.

Our performance rating considers how effective the Patriot Wildfire solid state drive performs in operations against direct competitor storage solutions. For reference, SandForce specifies the SF-2281 with 500 MB/s read and write, which Patriot increases to 555 MB/s read and 520 write maximum speeds for this SSD model. In our storage benchmark tests, the 120GB Patriot Wildfire Solid State Drive (model PW120GS25SSDR) performed at or above this speed, and many other SATA-based SSD's. Our test results proved the Patriot Wildfire was good for delivering 558/518 MBps peak read and writes speeds using ATTO Disk Benchmark SSD speed tests.

Get a load of this! Not only is the Patriot Wildfire able to break 1000MB/s read, but it almost does so when writing data as well. What's crazy is we are using a standard motherboard, no add-on RAID controller like the LSI units we test to achieve incredible speeds like this. The Intel Z68 and X68 motherboards are almost as fast as the add-in cards for RAID 0 with a pair of drives.
